STARFISH COUNTRY HOME SCHOOL FOUNDATION
"For every child to have access to quality education"
The Legacy Lives On
Dr. Richard P. Haugland, or Dick as he preferred to be called, was a very generous man who believed in helping and making positive impacts on people’s lives. He was passionate about education and more importantly the wellbeing of others. He supported hundreds of thousands of lives through many programs across Thailand, Nepal, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and India.
Dick founded Molecular Probes with his wife, Dr. Rosaria Haugland. He invented some of the most effective fluorescent dyes used in laboratories around the world. The Alexa Fluor Dyes (named after his son Alex) remain the best available after many years. In addition to being a leading scientist, Dick remained CEO and Marketing Director almost until the day he sold his company in 2003. After that, Dick established the Richard P. Haugland Foundation. He gave a significant sum into his foundation and kept adding assets to it until his death in October 2016.
Starfish Country Home School Foundation had been his home since 2004 until his passing in 2016. He was brilliant, kind-hearted and down to earth. He was the most beloved "Lung Dick" (Uncle Dick) for all the children. He enjoyed visiting programs in villages and rural areas. He loved teaching and being around children. He was actively involved with curriculum development and children’s enrichment activities to ensure that the children get the best quality education from the programs. His unique multi-media teaching methods and materials in mathematics, English ("Thaiglish") and Thai languages have made a tremendous impact on preschool and primary school children.
